It’s time once again to take a look at what happened the past week. The Weekly Highlights are a great way to catch up, but don’t forget that you can always watch the full stories from either our front page or the archives section.

NO LANGUAGE CAN DO THESE MEN JUSTICE

Last weekend, Sara Vogt spoke with Matt Herring (Private C.C. Hastings) – a member of a group of people re-enacting the lives of the Civil War voluntary Infantry Regiment from PA, known as the Bucktails. Over the weekend, the Bucktails celebrated their 21st annual reunion and first visit to Wellsboro.

Matt Herring explained why he participates in Civil War re-enactment. First, a number of his ancestors fought in the war. He wanted to keep their memory alive and honor them through his actions. Herring also wants the public to think about what the Civil War really was – Americans fighting Americans – and how we can grow from learning this. “Move forward from that and build this great country,” Matt stated.

Secondly, he lamented how Civil War history is not taught in depth in many schools, and re-enactment is a great teaching tool for children.

Also in this feature, local author Audrey Barber discovered her roots that lead her to her great-grandfather. About 12 years ago, Barber searched her family history online. She submitted her known relatives into an ancestry website and received a call the day after. The gentleman on the phone was a relative of her great-grandfather who shared that her great-grandfather was a captain of the Bucktails who gave his life at Gettysburg. Audrey is currently writing a book called Wellsboro Roots – filled with wonderful stories of heritage, honor and love. It should be completed sometime this year.

2014 TIOGA COUNTY FAIR QUEEN CROWNED!

This past weekend, the Fair Queen coronation was held at the Whiteneyville Fairgrounds. Seven competitors, along with their families, enjoyed a meal together before the ceremony began. Each contestant was required to turn in an essay about what the fair means to the community and give a speech expressing why the community should come to the fair. They were also given a question and asked to reflect upon it on the spot. This year’s discussion was, “What are the positives and negatives of social media?”

Last year’s queen, Corrine Evans, gave an address – encouraging this year’s contestants to make many memories during this experience. The coronations began following Miss Evan’s speech. Mikaileigh Baker was chosen as this year’s Miss Congeniality. The title of 2014 Tioga County Fair Queen second alternate was given to Christine Kennedy, followed by the first alternate, Victoria Sepiol. Finally, the crown of Fair Queen was bestowed upon Anna Copp.

FAMILY DAY AT THE TIOGA COUNTY FAIR!

It’s fair time! Wednesday was family fun day at the Tioga County Fair. The fair features many activities for the whole family to enjoy. There are carnival rides, livestock shows, a demolition derby, a tractor pull, and other track events. There is also a cooking, gardening, photography and art contest on display.

Wellsboro Home Page had the opportunity to talk with Jennie York – secretary of the Tioga County Fair. First, Jennie shared with us that the fair would not be possible with out the help of volunteers. Jennie, like many other people that work for the fair, have grown up coming to the fair and enjoying all of the festivities.

Home Page also spoke with many of the exhibitors, including Ralph Hartzell, who owns oxen, Matt Sampson, a local dairy farmer, and 9-year-old Janna Quick who is showcasing her sheep. MARCHING BAND FEATURES JOHN WILLIAMS

Are you ready for the season of Friday night football games to begin? The roaring crowds, the smell of popcorn all around, and the chilly fall air are loved by many…and let’s not forget the prideful beat of the Wellsboro High School marching band. The band will preform their show before each home Hornets football game, with the exception of Homecoming – where the band will preform at half time.

The band is preforming four songs (as opposed to there traditional three) and the theme is music by composer, John Williams. This includes arrangements from Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Superman, Jurassic Park, Jaws, and ET.

KICK BACK AT THE KIDLAND KARNIVAL!

Are you looking for some weekend fun? We have word on an incredible event happening tomorrow. Home Page spoke with pastors Lon and Dawn Williams of Liberty Church about their weekend plans. Kidland Karnival, (hosted by Liberty Church) is a free community event open to everyone and will be held this Saturday, August 9th from 12:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. The carnival will consist of inflatables, a petting zoo, face painting, balloon animals, cotton candy, french fries, hotdogs, ice cream, pony rides, games, prizes, and crafts and more! “The event is completely free, just like God’s grace!” says pastor Lon.

There are over 200 volunteers that help run the carnival, and this year they expect over 1,500 people to attend.
