The Weekly Highlights 04/28/14 – 05/02/14

A look at this week's highlights on Wellsboro Home Page

by Home Page Staff - May 3, 2014

Happy Weekend, Tioga County! It’s time once again to take a look at what happened the past week. The Weekly Highlights are a great way to catch up, but don’t forget that you can always watch the full stories from either our front page or the archives section.

THE WEEKLY BRIEFING – A LIFE CHANGING RIDE

Home Page spoke with Chief Jim Bodine and Ms. Sherry Mohr about an eye-opening, one-of-a-kind program offered at Wellsboro High School. Ms. Mohr teaches a Justice Education class at the high school. Students enrolled in this class are given the option to take a 2-hour ride with a Wellsboro police officer. “When I talk to students about it, I mention that this is kind of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for them.” says Mohr. “They should take [this program] while they can.”

DON’T MISS IT, COME VISIT!

Is your calendar empty? Wellsboro Home Page would like to present to you this collection of exciting, upcoming events!

The Mansfield University Strings Project will be having a recital this weekend. This musical event will take place on May 3 at 2:00pm in the First Presbyterian Church in Wellsboro. Bring your whole family – admission is free for all ages!

Goodies for Our Troops is arranging a “Fill the Goodwill Truck” Fundraiser. They will be accepting donations of used and new clothing, shoes, and boots (preferably in black garbage bags.) Bring your items to the Wellsboro Plaza on East Avenue from 10am to 4pm on May 3rd.

SUMMER ACTIVITIES FAIR FOLLOW-UP!

Home Page Staff traveled to the Summer Activities Fair in Mansfield, Pennsylvania. We had the opportunity to see the different ways each vendor had to impact the life of our youth to help them grow while having fun! The fair had games for the children to enjoy as well – a great environment for parents and vendors to discuss the possibilities for this summer.

DUI RISK SPURS OFFICER TRAINING

In 2015 Pennsylvania will become a first offense state. In other words, if someone is convicted of a D.U.I. and it’s their first offense, they will be subject to having the ignition interlock system installed in their vehicle. Educating local law enforcement is important, with ignition interlock becoming more common among drivers here in Pennsylvania. One key aspect of the training session was to educate officials on how to spot tampering with the device. This is a crucial component of the training considering officials will be encountering this device on a more frequent basis.

HELP GOODWILL HELP OUR COMMUNITY!

Goodwill is a non-profit organization that has been around for over 100 years. We spoke with Vice President of Retail, Paul Guzik, Retail Manager Lisa McCloski, and Employment Specialist Sue Whitey about the different ways we can give back to our community and how Goodwill is a stepping stone for individuals that are facing obstacles entering the workforce.
