THE WEEKLY BRIEFING – DRUG ABUSE RISES

According to George Wheeler, drugs and alcohol are still a major problem in Tioga County. “Right now the No. 1 issue, as it has been for a period of time, drug-wise, is alcohol.” said Wheeler. “Alcohol drives a substantial number of our crimes. As far as immediate consequences and what many people would consider drugs/illegal substances – heroin and the opiates are the big problem right now.”

A number of overdose deaths and other serious consequences have occurred due to opiate addiction. Chief Bodine also noted that the number of drug-related incidents has slowly been rising. “We’re seeing the opiates and the heorin – the heavier drugs come into play. It’s very concerning.”

DANCE MARATHON RAISES MILLIONS!

Penn State’s THON held the annual 46 hour no-sitting, no-sleeping dance marathon for children with pediatric cancer in the Bryce Jordan Center. The weekend was filled with laughter, tears and of course dancing.

Over 700 dancers began standing at 6 p.m. on Friday and did not sleep or sit until Sunday at 4 p.m. Many Penn State student-athletes performed their own signature dances to show their support and dedication to the cause.

After a year of fundraising, planning and dancing, THON broke last years record of over $12.3 million…

BASKETS & BOARDS: DOUBLE SPORTS!

This past weekend the Mansfield Tigers faced the Galeton Tigers for the chance to earn a berth to the state tournament. Mansfield trailed for most of the game but were able to force overtime. In overtime Galeton outscored the Tigers 11-0 for a 57-46 victory. With the win Galeton aadvances to states, while the loss ends Mansfield’s run.

Home Page Outdoor Correspondent Tim Morey was on location at Ski Sawmill for part 3 of our winter fun series. He spoke with Clayton Reese, the director of ski school at the mountain and asked him about some of the ins and outs of snowboarding.

Reese gave viewers his expert advice on how to go about snowboarding and what steps you should take to becoming an experienced snowboarder.

THE HEART OF THE MATTER

Diseases of the heart are the number one, non-accidental cause of death in Tioga County. Susquehanna Health and Cleveland Clinic are bringing new hope to the people of our area in battling these deadly trends.

The Cleveland Clinic has what is regarded by many to be the number one cardiovascular health program in the world. Dr. William McCauley, Dr. Bruce Lytle, and Dr. Michael Lazar shared how Susquehanna Health aspires to be the best of the best through this new affiliation.
