Weekly Highlights – 11/02/15 – 11/06/15

A look at this week’s highlights (and bloopers!) on Wellsboro Home Page

by Home Page Staff - November 7-8, 2015

It’s time once again to take a look at what happened the past week. The Weekly Highlights are a great way to catch up, but don’t forget that you can always watch the full stories from either our front page or the archives section.

The Towanda Black Knights held the Wellsboro Varsity Football team scoreless for a 17-0 upset victory on Friday, October 30 in Towanda.

The Hornets had their chances to jump out an early lead, but missed opportunities, and an aggressive Towanda defense, prevented them from scoring. Towanda fumbled the opening kickoff, which Wellsboro recovered near midfield. Sophomore quarterback Quinn Henry’s first pass sailed incomplete over the head of sophomore Chase Moser and Towanda stopped the Hornets three plays later on fourth down…

This Friday, November 6th, the community has a chance to support the work at His Thousand Hills through the Deeds to Seeds Auction and Donation Dinner. The camp will auction off services, gift cards, and other donations (deeds) from local businesses to raise funds (seeds) for the ministry. Dinner starts at 5:30pm in the Dining Hall, with the auction beginning at 6:30pm.

The Wellsboro Boys Soccer team’s season came to an end on Tuesday, November 3 in the semifinal round of District IV Class A playoffs with a 4-0 loss to #3 East Juniata.

The Hornets fought hard and had scoring chances early, but East Juniata was effective in minimizing any more chances Wellsboro had on the night, as they controlled the ball for the majority of the game.

The evening of Friday, November 6, 2015 will set the stage for a dramatic showdown: the highly anticipated rivalry football game between Wellsboro High School and North Penn. This year, the Hornets will meet the Panthers on their home field in Blossburg to determine who will walk away with Morton F. Jones Memorial Trophy. This trophy has been awarded to the winner and traded back and forth since 1962.

In today’s feature, former coach and Home Page correspondant Steve Adams meets with North Penn head coach Tom Dickinson and Wellsboro head coach Matt Hildebrand to talk about their coaching careers, their teams and what this long-standing rivalry means to the two schools and to them.

The rivalry game will take place at Island Park in Blossburg tomorrow, (Friday, November 6). Kickoff is at 7:00 pm.

For the second time in four years, the Wellsboro Volleyball team won a District IV championship. The girls defeated Wyalusing 3-1 on Thursday, November 5 at Williamson High School.

It’s diffucult for a team to beat an opponent three times in one year, but that’s exactly what the Lady Hornets did. In a rematch of last year’s title game, won 3-2 by Wyalusing, the Lady Hornets were out for revenge and to put their names in the history books. The last time Wellsboro won the title in 2012, members of this year’s team were in seventh and eighth grade.

The focused Lady Hornets took the first set 25-16 as they controlled the net, and were all over the court defensively. Wellsboro won the second set 25-23 as they held off a Lady Rams’ late rally.
