A look at this week’s highlights (and bloopers!) on Wellsboro Home Page

by Home Page Staff - October 3-4, 2015

It’s time once again to take a look at what happened the past week. The Weekly Highlights are a great way to catch up, but don’t forget that you can always watch the full stories from either our front page or the archives section.

Hornets take down Sayre, winning 32-7

The Wellsboro Varsity Football team scored 32 unanswered points in a 32-7 win over Sayre on Friday, September 25.

“I’m very happy with how the offense performed,” Hildebrand continued. “We spread the ball around to a bunch of different guys tonight and that’s always good because it makes us that much harder to defend. We lost a little intensity in the second half and we didn’t push as much as we could have and we need to improve on that and clean up the penalties.”

The Hornets were penalized 13 times for 115 yards on the night.

“We’ll watch film, get back to the drawing board and clean things up. Everything is all there, we just have to put it together,” concluded Hildebrand.

Defensively, junior Parker Jones led the Hornets with 13 tackles and a sack. Tremper added 12 tackles, sophomore Collin Pietropola had 8 stops, and Henry had an interception.

Next week, the Hornets return home for a NTL Division 1 matchup with Athens on Friday, October 2 at 7:00 p.m.

Dunham’s Corner – 110th Anniversary!

Today’s broadcast-feature celebrates the 110th Anniversary of Dunham’s Department Store. It’s the latest edition of Dunham’s Corner with your host, Ann Dunham Rawson.

Ann takes us through a fascinating local history lesson. We get to enjoy and appreciate some very old photos that help tell the Dunhams’ story. The first photo shows the Dunham’s location on Main Street between 1905 and 1913. Ann also shares a shot of the original R.J. Dunham grocery store. (The photo was taken about 1909.) We see Ann’s Great Grandmother, Great Grandfather and others in the photo. The building was destroyed by a fire in 1913.

Wellsboro Volleyball Improves to 8-1

The Wellsboro Varsity Volleyball team beat North Penn-Liberty in four games, 3-1 on Tuesday, September 29.

The Lady Hornets won the first set 25-20, but North Penn-Liberty won the second 25-23 to tie the match at 1-1. After a slow start in the third set, Wellsboro bounced back to win 25-21 and hung on in the fourth set to win 25-21.

With the win, the Varsity team improves to 8-1 (4-1 NTL Division 1). The team will be back in action on Thursday, October 1 as they travel to Northeast Bradford.

Inside the Student Council

Today Homepage correspondent and Wellsboro High School Student Council President Jessica Smith met with some of the Student Council officers to ask about their leadership roles within the Council.

The Council’s secretary, Lizzie Poirier, is responsible for the meetings’ agendas as well as taking and distributing minutes to all members. Maxwell Johnson, the vice president, is responsible for the overall climate of the Council and assists the president as needed. Luna Alexander serves as the Council’s treasurer. Alexander’s primary duty is handling the money within the Student Council account. District Conference President Darci Warriner bears the responsibility of planning the District 7 District Conference. She explains, “District Conference is when schools from around our area come to our school and join in in leadership activities. [This year] we’ll have a speaker from Canada named Andy Thibodeau.”

Back to Basics – Choosing Good Friends

On today’s feature Pastor Mike White talks with us about the importance of good friendships. This is an extremely important topic to consider. It can make the difference between experiencing a life of love, joy, true peace and happiness verses a life of emptiness, anger, frustration and sadness.

Here’s a question for you. Who are the people you spend time with on a regular basis? Now that you have them in your mind… who are they really? What kind of people are they? What do they stand for? What do they like to do? Do they tend to encourage you? Does it make you a better person to be in their presence? Do they lift you up or pull you down?
