STAIRWAY TO HEALTH

To stair or not to stair – that is the question!

Starting now, every step counts. As a follow-up to the successful Weight Loss Challenge, Susquehanna Health’s Health and Wellness Educators are introducing the “Stairways to Health” Campaign. On each campus, there is a designated stairwell with inspirational quotes encouraging participants. Some of the benefits of taking the stairs include an increase in personal health/wellness/fitness, decrease in stress, an opportunity to stay Susquehanna Healthy pre-holiday season, improved health for your families, and it even helps the environment.

SPORT PREVIEWS – FOOTBALL IS BACK!

Football season kicks off this Friday, September 4 and the Hornets will be looking to continue the success they’ve had the past two seasons. The year, however, they will have to do it without the class of 2015, who went down as the winning senior class in Wellsboro history with 27 victories, 18 of which came in the last two years.

The young Hornets, and third-year head coach Matt Hildebrand, are eager to take the field for their first regular season game as they host Cowanesque Valley at Mansfield University at 7:30 p.m.

MAKING THE CUT – JOEY DOGANIERO

Over 500,000 male high school students play basketball in the United States. Only 3.4% of those students play at the collegiate level. Not everyone follows the traditional route to play in the NCAA. Most participants are actually “walk-on’s”. A “Walk-On” is an athlete who becomes part of a team without being actively recruited beforehand or awarded an athletic scholarship. NCAA Division II and III, NAIA schools and Junior colleges all welcome walk-ons. Doganerio is a 2014 graduate of Wellsboro High School who is currently attending the University of New Haven in Connecticut. Doganerio went through a series of tryouts before making the final spot on the team.

THE ART OF WINE & FIRST FRIDAY

Once again the streets of downtown Wellsboro will be filled with art, music, games, activities, foods, shopping specials and many smiling people. The theme this month is The Art of Wine, so come to town for a taste!

There are always prizes to be won each month! New for this month (instead of the usual scavenger hunt): almost all of our downtown businesses will be having their own in-house prize drawings. It’s a town-wide First Friday Raffle! It’s easy to play and FREE – just stop in at each business and enter their giveaway. Of course, the more businesses you visit, the better your chance of winning a prize…or maybe two or more! Each business will draw and notify their own winner.

MU PSYCH CENTRAL – FIGHTING STIGMA

Mental health is an important issue, like medical health, yet much of society does not view these two fields in the same way. In terms of maintaining our physical health, most of us think about going to the doctor when we feel sick in order to be diagnosed and treated. Some of us even take preventative action and live lifestyles that reduce physical maladies. Not nearly as many people take the same precautions or interventions seriously when it comes to mental health. Why is it that we give more weight to physical health over mental health?
