Warriors Open Postseason With Dominant Win Over Mount Carmel

Warriors Open Postseason With Dominant Win Over Mount Carmel

by Joe Carreon - February 3, 2022

CANTON — The Canton Warriors opened the first round of the PIAA D4 duals in style with a 53-15 win over Mount Carmel on Wed. Feb. 2.

The Warriors used seven pins on the night along with three decisions to pick up the win.

“It’s always nice to get out there and get a good start, we started at a good weight and then got into the middle of our line-up where we feel we are pretty strong,” said Canton Coach Lyle Wesneski.

The Warriors are looking at another match-up against a tough Montoursville squad, a team they faced on Tuesday night and lost to 38-30.

Wesneski knows they will have to “battle hard” as he usually says to improve if they want to be successful this weekend.

“We need to raise our level, it’s going to be another battle and it will probably be tougher, it will come down to three or four swing bouts.

While some may think that wrestling the same squad twice in five days would lead to a disadvantage, Wesneski believes just the opposite.

“It doesn’t really matter who we are facing, we are going to get our guys ready and be prepared for the pressure situations they are going to face in the postseason. This is what it’s all about.

Canton’s Hudson Ward knows all about being “battle tested” as Coach Wesneski preaches to his team. Ward was down early and battled back to earn a fall over Zach Reed in the 138 match-up.

“I have to keep a good mindset in matches like this, I have had good practice partners that have pushed me and he started to wear down in third period,” said Ward.

Ward knows he will have to keep the same focus as they head into the second round of team duals this weekend.

“I’m going to focus on cleaning up my stuff, taking good shots and working with my coaches to make sure I have as good of a weekend as possible.
