WARRIORS CENTRAL: THIRD GRADE BUTTERFLY LAUNCH
The Canton Elementary School third grade teachers (Mrs. Beers, Mrs. Williams, Miss Martell, and Mr. Hollett) were happy to announce that one of their two butterflies was ready for release this week. The butterfly, named Bill, was ready for release and the third graders were excited to see what would happen once the zipper on the cage was released. Which way would Bill, the butterfly, fly?
Canton students have been studying their science unit on insects. They have learned about the body structures and life cycles of insects, including butterflies. Butterflies have a complete metamorphosis, the students learned. The first stage was the egg and the next stage was the larva. The students in Canton Elementary School saw the caterpillar, another name for larva, eat and eat and eat! He was captured eating milkweed in Mr. Hollett’s farm. The students were surprised to see the caterpillar, Bill, turn into the pupa stage as he created a chrysalis. When he emerged from the chrysalis the metamorphosis was complete and Bill the butterfly was an adult. In the last stage, the adult state – the students were able to see him stretch out his wings as they dried. Once the zipper was opened the adult butterfly came out and eventually flew away! Students shouted, “Go Bill, Go!!!” as he flew straight up as far as their eyes could see.
