Volleyball Season Preview 2016

by Ed Weaver - September 2, 2016

The 2016 volleyball season is less than a week away, and the Wellsboro Lady Hornets are ready to defend their 2015 District IV crown.

Head Coach: Sharon Zuchowski (5th year, 53-25)
2015 Season Record: 17-3
Key Returners: Kirsten Florio, Morgan Florio
Player(s) to Watch: Kirsten Florio, Morgan Florio

The Lady Hornets won their second District IV championship in 4 years last year, but lost 5 seniors to graduation in the spring. While that class will be difficult to replace, Coach Zuchowski had multiple underclassmen on last year’s Varsity squad that saw lots of playing time down the stretch in important games.

The Lady Hornets return Kirsten and Morgan Florio, who were both All-Region selections last season by the Towanda Daily Review. The sisters play aggressive at the net, and will need to do so this year to help guide Wellsboro back to the playoffs.

Sydney Tremper, Kaeli Butters, Olivia Kurtz, and Brianne Keane also return to the squad for 2016 and will see more playing time. New to the Varsity squad this year as Jillian Graver (11), Hannah Burnett (11), Jewel Cummings (11), Cheyenne Sherman (11), and Grace Feil (11).

The Lady Hornets finished 2nd in the NTL Large School Division standings behind Towanda last year. While the Hornets are looking to be at the top of their District, they must also keep pace with Towanda if they want to win their first league championship since 1991-92.
