UPMC Susquehanna – Sports Medicine

by Kristy Warren - March 6, 2018

When we think “sports medicine,” we naturally think of athletes, but as Dr. Ronald Campbell and Musculoskeletal Director Seth Kinley explain, it’s a bit of a misnomer. “You don’t have to injure yourself during a sporting event to qualify for expert help—a sports medicine professional can evaluate you for any injury to a muscle or joint that’s preventing you from staying active,” explains Dr. Campbell.

UPMC Susquehanna’s Medical Plaza in Mansfield offers a one-stop-shop for your full recovery journey, offering primary care, lab, imaging, rehabilitation, and specialty services in one convenient location. From tearing an ACL during the big game to sore elbows at recreational bowling, UPMC Susquehanna Sports Medicine has you covered.

When should you seek out care?

Sore shoulder after your fishing trip? Suffer a painful slip during a weekend hike? Don’t let pain become part of your game!

“If you’ve had a nasty fall or have begun experiencing pain during your favorite activities, don’t put off a trip to the office. When you have an injury that’s impeding your daily activities, you should seek out a sports medicine professional,” urges Seth Kinley, certified athletic trainer and Director of Musculoskeletal Services for UPMC Susquehanna.

Why see a sports medicine professional?

“Whether you’re an athlete or simply active, we can help you safely return to the activities you love,” notes Dr. Campbell, a specialist in orthopedics and sports medicine. Common types of injuries seen at UPMC Susquehanna’s sports medicine clinic include strains, muscle tears, fractures, concussions, dislocations and sprains.

Following a primary care visit, a sports medicine professional can provide unique insight into the best treatment for your unique injury. Sports medicine physicians like Dr. Campbell have advanced training in diagnosing and evaluating these types of injuries, collaborating closely with orthopedic and therapy teams to determine your treatment.

What does treatment entail?

Contrary to popular belief, surgery isn’t always the answer. Physical and aquatic therapy can play a key role in returning range of motion, balance, and flexibility following an injury. The clinic offers comprehensive rehabilitation services onsite, including physical, aquatic, vestibular, pelvic floor and McKenzie therapies to treat issues with joint and muscle pain, injuries, and balance issues.

UPMC Susquehanna’s team of highly skilled sports medicine physicians, physical therapists, orthopedic surgeons and certified athletic trainers work together to safely return patients to the activities they love. To learn more, call (570) 321-2020 or visit UPMCSusquehanna.org.
