UPMC Susquehanna – New Year, New You!

by Home Page Staff - January 29, 2019

The New Year, for many, marks the occasion for a fresh start and renewed focus on health and wellness. Judith Tubbs, CRNP of UPMC Susquehanna believes that these goals can best be achieved when you’re working with your doctor.

“When you’re trying to decide exactly what it is you’re wanting to do,” says Tubbs, “Do you want to lose weight? Exercise more? Work on stress and anxiety? It’s good to have a group of people that can help you and have that team behind you. But it also helps to talk to your health care provider because sometimes they have ins and outs and can direct you in the right direction and where to go for the help you need.”

There is no shortage of resources and online recommendations for what to do to improve your health, including how-to videos, exercise demonstrations, new diet fads – but how do you know which ones are helpful or harmful? What resources suit your needs? These considerations are another reason to talk to your doctor first.

“Find out, am I healthy enough to do this?” states Tubbs, “Or could this cause harm to me if I do something like this?”

Improving general health and wellness management affects more than just personal health. Tubbs recommends evaluating the following areas of your life to get started:
– Are you getting enough sleep? Sleep affects everything, including weight management, exercise, stress, overall well-being and anxiety.
– What are your bad habits? Do you smoke? If so, you need to quit. If you drink alcohol, limit your consumption.
– Are you happy? Are you in a good place?
– Do you have spiritual well-being?
– Do you have an wholistic approach to your health?

“All of those things, if they’re out of balance, can affect our overall health and wellness,” stats Tubbs.
