Tyoga Golf Course Hosts Drive, Chip & Putt For Young Golfers

by Sara Vogt - July 9, 2024

Joe Haight, General Manager of the Tyoga Golf Course in Wellsboro, PA, spoke to Home Page’s Executive Vice President, Sara Vogt, about the PGA of America initiative called “Drive Chip & Putt.”

Throughout the interviews, both children and adults expressed their enthusiasm for golf, emphasizing that it is indeed a lifetime sport!

Twenty-two young golfers came out to play today. Joe explained that the idea behind this fun day was that they hit three drives, three chips, and three putts, and there was a scoring system to qualify them to advance to the next stage. This day is a local qualifier; if they advance here, they go to Buffalo to play. If they advance past that, they will have the opportunity to be one of the eighty young golfers from around the country who will go to the Master’s Tournament next April in Augusta, Georgia.

Joe says, ” Even if you do not play golf competitively, it is an excellent networking opportunity later in life, and it can help open doors, and it is a sport you can play until you are one hundred.” He said with a smile.

When I spoke with golfers/friends Dominick Faulisi of the Elmira/ Corning area and Benton Zay of Liberty, PA, they confirmed what Joe had also said. When twelve-year-old Dominick was asked why he enjoyed golf, he responded, ” Well, I enjoy it because it is the only sport you can play from age 10 to age 100! You could play it at any point in your life, and it is always going to be there.” Benton said, “He enjoys it because of the competition and the enjoyment of going out with his friends and playing a relaxing round of golf.”

The following young golfers I spoke with were all from the nonprofit organization called Williamsport Area Junior Golf. The lead coach we talked to on camera was Leroy Baer. His grandson, Zakai Williams, said that he enjoys playing golf because it’s a game you can play any day, emphasizing its accessibility to all! Mom Teresa and her daughter Sophia Frierson came for the day, and Sophia said it was her first time to play in a tournament and she had fun! Brayden Harris and Xavier Colimon also spoke to us about the enjoyment of playing golf. Please watch the video portion of this broadcast to hear the players and see them play.
