Troy Trojans Soar Past Wellsboro Hornets, 49-12
On Friday, September 25, the Troy Trojans traveled to Wellsboro to take on the Hornets, dominating from the opening whistle and cruising to a 49-12 victory.
Troy opened the scoring midway through the first quarter following a successful defensive stop. Quarterback Spencer Martin found Logunn Heasley on a slant route over the middle, and Heasley broke free for the touchdown. The extra point was blocked, giving the Trojans an early 6-0 lead.
The Trojan defense continued to make an impact on the following drive, forcing a fumble that was recovered just inches from the Wellsboro goal line. Troy quickly capitalized, with Evan Allen following his blockers up the middle for another touchdown. Landon Lee added the extra point to make it 13-0.
Troy added another score late in the first quarter. Following a big reception by Trey Teribury, Martin connected with Josiah Pesesky in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown, giving the Trojans a commanding 20-0 advantage.
The Trojans continued their offensive attack in the second quarter. Teribury hauled in another big pass to set Troy up inside the Wellsboro 10-yard line before Jayden Kutt punched the ball into the end zone. The extra point extended the lead to 27-0.
Wellsboro attempted to answer, working its way toward the goal line, but the Trojan defense held firm and kept the Hornets off the scoreboard.
Later in the quarter, Troy delivered one of the biggest plays of the night. Starting from their own four-yard line, Martin connected with Teribury on a short inside pass. Teribury turned on the speed and raced untouched all the way to the end zone for a 96-yard touchdown, earning the Blaise Alexander Play of the Game and putting Troy ahead 35-0.
After another Trojan touchdown, Wellsboro finally broke through in the third quarter. With just over two minutes remaining, Derrick Blasz dropped back, faked to the right, and found Colton Hauser in the end zone for a touchdown. The extra point was tipped, leaving the score 42-6.
The Trojans added another touchdown before Wellsboro found the end zone one final time with about three and a half minutes remaining in the game. Blasz found Grady Morral over the Trojan secondary for the score.
When the final whistle sounded, Troy had secured a dominant 49-12 victory over Wellsboro.
Both teams return to action Friday, October 2. Wellsboro will travel to take on the Athens Wildcats, while Troy hits the road to face the North Penn-Mansfield Panthers.
