Troy Trojans Hold Off Athens Wildcats, 31-21
The Troy Trojans picked up another win Friday night, defeating the Athens Wildcats 31-21 in a competitive matchup at Alparon Park on September 4.
Troy wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Less than a minute into the game, Spencer Martin connected with Trey Teribury on a play-action pass in the flat, and Teribury took it into the end zone for the early touchdown. Gavin Lykon-Leffler added the extra point to put the Trojans ahead 7-0.
Troy extended its lead late in the opening quarter when Josiah Pesesky took an outside pitch and broke loose for a long touchdown run. Following the PAT, the Trojans held a 14-0 advantage heading into the second quarter.
Athens answered early in the second. Facing fourth down just inside Trojan territory, Connor Davidson found Kade Rowe, who powered his way to the pylon for the Wildcats’ first touchdown of the night. The successful extra point cut Troy’s lead to 14-7.
The Trojans responded with some trickery midway through the quarter. Martin pitched the ball to Pesesky, who then lofted a pass toward the corner of the end zone. Teribury came down with the touchdown reception, giving Troy a 21-7 lead.
Troy added another score just before halftime on the Blaise Alexander Play of the Game. With Athens trying to put together a scoring drive, the Trojan defensive line applied pressure and forced the Wildcats out of the pocket. An attempted deep pass was intercepted by Logunn Heasley, who returned it for a pick-six. The touchdown gave Troy a 28-7 lead at the break.
Athens mounted an effort to rally in the second half, but the Trojans’ defense held strong. Troy ultimately secured the 31-21 victory.
The Trojans will look to make it another win next Friday when they host the Towanda Black Knights.
