Troy Holds Off Montgomery in Defensive Battle
The Troy Trojans defeated the Montgomery Red Raiders 14-7 on Friday, September 18, in a defensive battle that remained scoreless through the first three quarters.
Both defenses held strong throughout the opening three quarters, keeping either team from finding the end zone.
Troy finally broke through late in the third quarter. Facing fourth-and-six just inside Red Raider territory, quarterback Spencer Martin rolled to his left and found Josiah Pesesky, who hauled in the pass for a first down and brought the Trojans inside the Montgomery 15-yard line.
Troy capitalized early in the fourth quarter. Martin handed the ball to Jayden Kutt, who bounced the run outside and found the end zone to put the Trojans on the board, 6-0.
The Troy defense then forced Montgomery to punt on its next possession, giving the Trojans another opportunity to extend their lead.
With six minutes remaining, Martin pitched the ball outside to Pesesky, who broke through the defense and scored to make it 12-0. Reed Palmer added the successful two-point conversion, giving Troy a 14-0 advantage.
Montgomery responded late in the game, marching down the field with less than two minutes remaining. Josh Knoebel capped the drive with a quick inside run into the end zone, and the Red Raiders converted the extra point to cut the deficit to 14-7.
However, Troy’s defense held strong during the final minute, securing the 14-7 victory.
The Trojans return to action this Friday when they travel to Wellsboro to take on the Hornets.
