Trojans Wallop Panthers to Improve to 3-0

by Ed Weaver - September 12, 2022

The Troy Trojans scored three special teams touchdowns before their offense even touched the ball to jump out to a 21-0 lead en route to 56-14 an NTL Large School Division win over the North Penn-Mansfield Panthers on Friday, September 9.

The Trojans’ Charles Oldroyd returned the opening kick 75 yards to put Troy up just 14 seconds in, then after holding the Panthers on their first two offensive series, Troy’s punt return team returned both punts for scores. Camryn Harwick returned the first punt and Justice Chimics returned the second, giving Troy a commanding 21-0 lead not even three minutes into the game.

The Panthers did find the end zone late in the quarter as Cooper Shaw intercepted a Trojan pass in Troy territory. From there, Karson Dominick went to work, completing passes to Kohen Lehman, Alex Davis, Sammy Lawrence and to Shaw before calling his own number on a QB sneak from a yard out, cutting the lead to 21-7.

Troy added one more score before the quarter was finished, though, as Clayton Smith scampered 56 yards to push the lead back to 21.

In the second quarter Smith was at it again as he scored a pair of touchdowns. One coming on a 75-yard run and the other 5 yards. In between Smith’s runs, Lehman broke off a 62-yarder of his own. After Smith’s and Lehman’s runs it was 42-14 in favor of the Trojans, who would add one more score before the first half buzzer sounded. On the defensive side of the ball, Chimics picked off a pass and returned it 25 yards, giving Troy a 49-14 lead at the half.

Troy added one more score before the night was over. On the first play of the fourth quarter Kael Millard found the end zone from 10 yards out, bringing the final score to 56-14 and improving the Trojans to 3-0 (1-0 NTL Large School Division).

Troy rushed for 250 yards on the night, 160 of them coming on 8 carries by Clayton Smith. Evan Wood completed 2-of-5 passes for 23 yards with Mason Smith catching one of those passes for 20 yards.

Dominick completed 10-of-30 passes for 34 yards on the night with Lawrence catching 3 balls for 19 yards. Lehman finished with 135 yards on the ground on 15 carries.

The Panthers fall to 0-3 (0-3 NTL Large School Division). Both teams return to action next week as Troy travels to Wyalusing on Thursday and the Panthers host Northwest Area on Friday.
