Trojans conquer Southern Colombia in Semi-finals, 69-28

by Wyatt Wood - November 11, 2024

On Friday, November 8th, the Troy Trojans football team hosted the Southern Colombia Tigers for the District IV AA Semi-finals at Mansfield University’s Karl Van Norman Field.

The Trojans were a force to be reckoned with from the opening kickoff. Lincoln Chimics was back to receive, fielded it, found a hole, and went untouched to the house. Gavin Lykon-Leffler’s point-after-attempt was good – the Trojans led 7-0 just seconds into the game.

With 9 and a half minutes left, the Trojans advanced their way down the field. Mason Smith was forced out of bounds inside the 10. Then, wide pitch to Brendan Gilliland – he cut back and in for the touchdown. The kick was no good – Troy ahead 13-0.

Second quarter, Troy on the Tigers’ 31 yard line, Joseph Frye in motion, received the pitch, faked the run and aired it out to Chimics. He broke a tackle and rushed over the goal line. The point after attempt was no good. Troy was dominating, 19-0.

On Troy’s next possession Woodward found the hole and rushed for a 62 yard score! Troy up, with 25 unanswered points just before halftime.

Southern Colombia got on the board with 14 points with the remaining time, but Troy still had another trick up their sleeve. Mason Smith was back to return on the kickoff. He fielded the ball, bounced off a Tiger, found daylight, and turned on the jets for a 94 yard return. At halftime the Trojans held a commanding lead, 31-14.

Southern started the second-half scoring, but the Trojans had a lot more to say. Troy was 1st and 10 on their own 43, Woodward faked it up the middle, called his own number, hit the outside and was gone! The two point conversion was good, 40-20 Troy.

Next, Southern on their own 26 yard line, freshmen Spencer Martin read the play and took away any hope of the Tigers bringing the game back with a pick 6!

The Trojans buried the Tigers in the end zone for a safety and scored twice more on the night, finishing the semi-final bout with a final score of 69-28.

The Trojans will be back at Karl Van Norman Field this Friday for the District IV AA Finals against Warrior Run.
