Tioga County Homeless Initiative

by Sara Vogt - March 20, 2019

Abby Thorborg, the Director of Operations for TCHI, shared with Home Page’s Vice President, Sara Vogt, the mission of the shelter. Abby stated, “The mission of the Initiative is to provide a warm, safe and caring environment for individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

Since 2012 many have found refuge at the shelter including those coming out of jail and the armed services. Sometimes many of those staying at the shelter just need support to find their way through the immediate crisis to move forward in a more positive way. They have access to many resources provided for them while staying at the shelter.

Abby mentioned Darren Hudick as one who was a guest at the shelter who wants to give his time and energy back to God and those who helped him. At this time he is in the process of developing the produce production at the shelter. He has over twenty years of experience in agriculture. At this time they have already started a seedling table in the cellar at the house in preparation for the outside soil garden. They hope to sell the produce at the shelter and other farmers markets throughout our region. Their website details the needs for this produce production to be successful. A list on their website will be provided for those who would like to donate items to help with this project.

Another fundraiser that Abby spoke about with Sara was the one happening on the Pine Creek Rail Trail. Starting at nine o’clock on the 29th of June and ending around noon. This is an opportunity for the whole family to come out and support the shelter. It is a 5K run/walk and a 7-mile bike ride that starts at the Darling Run entrance to the trail.
