Tioga County Homeless Initiative Expanding

by Deb Bastian - November 10, 2022

TIOGA COUNTY: Tioga County Homeless Initiative (TCHI) is growing to better serve the homeless in our county. With a mission to provide a warm, safe, and caring environment for individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness, TCHI has a new building under construction, and a bright future to continue their important work. TCHI has housed and assisted over 1,273 individuals and families in the past 10 years.

Abby Thorborg, Director of Operations for TCHI gave Home Page Network a tour of the old facility as well as their future home. The current facility, an older home in Whitneyville, can house approximately 10 residents. There is a modest bathroom for women and one for men. A small kitchen with a table allows residents to cook and eat their meals. The new facility will be able to help almost twice as many as well as have dedicated space should a family need housing. Especially beneficial will be new office spaces, examination room and office for medical needs, two laundry rooms, and plenty of storage. A space for children will also be created in part of the downstairs area of the new facility.

More information about the Tioga County Homeless Initiative can be found at www.tiogahomeless.org. If you would like to talk with Abby about supporting the program and learn about the new building project, call 570-724-9001 or 570-439-9383. When asked when they hope to move into their new home Abby says “In God’s time”. With support from the community, it could be as early as next summer!
