The Destroyers Are Returning For Third Season

The Destroyers Are Returning For Third Season

by Deb Bastian - Originally aired April 8, 2022

Owner, Larry Gill is looking forward to the Destroyer’s 3rd season in Mansfield starting in June. Although the pandemic halted the 2021 season, the team is going to be back this year with more fun and excitement for all. The Fourth of July double header promises to be a great way for families and friends to celebrate the holiday.

Larry said that Mansfield is perfect for the summer league team because the town is so welcoming and Mansfield University’s Shaute Baseball Field is perfect for games.

The Destroyers is a Not-For-Profit organization owned by Larry and his family. As such, the team is able to receive grant money from Major League Baseball to help in running the team. Another way money for the season is raised is through sponsors who may receive signage, season tickets, program ads, team photo ads, poster schedule ads, etc., depending upon their level of support.

This year Larry has done all the recruiting for the team. Players in this league must be either currently in college or have graduated from high school and enrolled in college for the fall. Of the 32 players on the Destroyers team who come from all over the United States and Canada, five will be close to home coming from Sayre, Elmira Heights, Horseheads and Corning. He is also expecting three baseball players from Mansfield University. The team has 2 interns and one person in charge of stats and the press box.

Housing the team is done through host families and at the Commons at Mansfield. A host family is asked to open their home to one or more players from early June through the end of July. Meals and transportation are not the responsibility of the host family. In return for their hospitality, the host family receives season tickets and a $200 stipend.

Prices at the games this year have been reduced to make a game even more affordable for families. Adults will be $5; Seniors/Military/Students will be $3. A season ticket will be $85 for adults and $55 for Seniors/Military/Students.

If you are interested in hosting members of the team or participating as a sponsor, contact Larry Gill at lgill.mansfielddestroyers@gmail.com.
