The Briefing – Back to School
It’s that time of year again. School is back in session and Chief Jim Bodine would like for everyone to have a safe school year!
Here are some reminders to motorists, parents and students:
Motorists and Parents – please pay attention to the crossing guards as they are there to make sure that children cross streets safely. If you are at a stop where you are allowed to turn right on red, make sure that you know where everyone is; a small child or toddler can walk into your blind spot very easily – be aware and take your time.
Students – please don’t assume that because the cross-walk sign is lit that it is always safe for you to cross. Some motorist may not see the sign or you may proceed through the intersection. Please look both ways before crossing and if you are at a location with a crossing guard, wait for them to lead you across – that is what they are there to do.
The first week of school, “the loop” drive-thru lane of Charlotte Lappla tends to get congested in the mornings and evenings. Please remember – if you are there to pick up your child – stay in the left lane of the loop so traffic from Don Gill can go by on the right. Please don’t block the exit of the loop so traffic may flow smoothly. You may also park down the street, just past Sturrock Street.
The Rock L. Butler Middle School also suffers from traffic congestion at the intersection of Queen and Nichols Streets. If you park to pick up your children, please park further down on Nichols Street past Highland Street, or up on Highland Street to the right off of Nichols and have your children meet you there. Parking before these sections is prohibited as it not only congests traffic, but also makes it difficult (if not situationally impossible at times) for school buses to pass through the lane.
Queen and Nichols Streets have also undergone some speed changes – the speed limit has decreased from 35 MPH to 25 MPH. Please remember this when dropping off and picking up your kids from school. The Wellsboro Police Department will be monitoring this area closely per the change.
