The Art of Percussion
Music has the ability to bring people together and the Southern Tioga Percussion Ensemble is doing just that. After a six year hiatus, ensemble director, Jon Ruth, restarted the program as a way to train the drum line members in the spring. The program has transformed into its own art form with storytelling, costumes, and dances.
Jon commented on the value of the ensemble saying, “It’s really important to the students involved that we spend a lot of time working on a small piece of music that we really refine to a level of perfection that we aren’t able to do in other types of musical groups. It really builds a sense of family and commitment among the kids and it’s a really great experience.”
Ensemble members, Khaiya Johnson, Elijah Button, and Eion Hicks-Lee, also took the tome to share their favorite parts about being apart of the program.
The Ensemble will compete in the Tournament Indoor Association (njatob.org) from February-April, culminating at regional championships April 25 at Bellefonte HS and Atlantic Coast Championships at the Wildwood NJ Convention Center April 30-May 2, featuring over 200 school performing ensembles in competition.
The Southern Tioga Percussion Ensemble is hosting an event (“Music In Motion” Festival) on Saturday, April 18, at 6 pm at North Penn-Liberty High School and invites anyone in the community to attend.
