Wellsboro’s Trinity Lutheran School hosted a hands-on Music STEM camp with PEERS Foundation and New Covenant Academy.

Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) was the camp’s focus as they tackled the challenge of creating music digitally. Middle school students enthusiastically jumped into building synthesizers, coding, and computer design in an effort to engineer their own unique sound.

Coding or programming is basically building a set of instructions for computers to follow. Learning this essential skill actually helps children think less abstractly & visualize breaking problems down into more manageable portions. By applying STEM to real world challenges and building in a lot of fun collaboration shakes up traditional learning while reengaging student’s curiosity.

STEM jobs in America are growing at an astounding rate- three times that of any other field and education programs are being called upon to keep pace with progress. But according to the U.S. Department of Education, only 15% of students proficient in mathematics were interested in STEM careers.

The Smithsonian Science Education Center found that in 2015 there were nearly 8.6 million STEM jobs in the United States and currently an estimated 2.4 million STEM jobs go unfilled. Without STEM programs like Trinity’s, there may not be enough qualified American employees available to take on these new positions. Not only are STEM occupations plentiful, they also out-earn non- STEM fields by 12-30% across all education levels, says the SSEC.

STEM is not about memorizing facts and formulas, it is about doing. It’s developing a deeper understanding of necessary 21st-century career skills and giving students ample opportunities to apply that learning in real-world situations. The job market is changing rapidly as technology advances and thankfully local schools are taking the initiative to prepare these young minds for America’s future.
