STSD Hosts Robotics Day

by Lauren Gooch - February 19, 2019

On February 14th, the Southern Tioga School District hosted “Robotics Day” at the Blossburg Elementary School. This occasion connected high school students with elementary school students to get an inside look at the art of coding. Blossburg Elementary and Liberty Elementary Librarian, Sarah Murray, started Robotics Day in response to the successful day they had last year working with drones.

By introducing the children to a variety of robots, they were able to recognize how this technology is used in our everyday lives. Amazon’s Alexa, ATM machines, drones, delivery services, surgery equipment, and 3D printers are just some of the examples that these children discovered.

While the students recognized that robots are significant in our everyday lives, they also noticed the many ways that robots can impact certain occupations. Careers such as doctors/nurses, engineers, bankers, military/police officers, and video game creators all involve the use of this type of technology to accomplish tasks. By involving students in block coding at an early age, it sets them up for success in whatever their future career may be.

A special thank you to The Steam Team for providing these students with this type of hands-on education!
