Step Outdoors – The Best of Hills Creek

These are the Top 10 best features about Hills Creek State Park

by Amiee Jones - August 19, 2016

No matter the time of year, Hills Creek State Park has countless opportunities and activities to enjoy. Pete Herres and Tim Morey, of Step Outdoors, describe Hills Creek as a “four season park”, and take a few moments to explain all that this scenic land has to offer.

For avid bird watchers, the park becomes alive with water fowl in the spring. Loons, Eagles, and Osprey are a few of the birds you can find during this time of year. Fishing is a great option at the park, as well. Then, each spring season comes to a close with Springfest, where you can enjoy kayaking, canoeing, fishing, fly tying, hiking and much more. Springfest provides many children’s activities, too.

When the weather heats up, Hills Creek begins to bustle with summer activity. Many visitors enjoy camping, swimming, hiking and more. There are also a few summer camps that take place at the park.

As the year moves along, the fall foliage becomes a spectacular draw for Hills Creek State Park. Photography, walking, jogging and relaxation are a few of the reasons to visit the park during this peaceful, beautiful time of year. The annual TRYathlon is held each fall at Hills Creek. An emphasis is placed on the word “try” because this event welcomes athletes from all levels of competition and experience.

Last but not least, if you feel that there is nothing to do but stay inside and hibernate through the winter months, think again! At Hills Creek State Park there are numerous opportunities for frosty fun. Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding and ice fishing are some of the more popular activities. There are also heated cabins available to rent for winter getaways.

This picturesque park is a Tioga County treasure, and there are so many ways to enjoy its beauty. Remember to keep Hills Creek State Park in mind for your next outdoor activity!
