Spring Sports Standouts Shine Across Galeton, Wellsboro and Beyond

by Wyatt Wood, Andrew Moore - May 25, 2026

Local student athletes were in the spotlight this week, with Galeton honoring its top sports standouts, Wellsboro baseball wrapping up a championship season, and area track and field athletes bringing home medals from the state championships.

Galeton Area School District recently honored its student athletes during the annual sports banquet, recognizing a year of hard work, dedication and achievement.

The evening began with a special presentation for senior athlete Tegan Bronkoski and junior athlete Brielle Lehman, who were awarded their varsity jackets. Later in the program, several senior athletes received some of the banquet’s top honors.

Bronkoski and Isaac Miller were named Best Sportsmanship winners, recognized for their leadership, positive attitudes and commitment throughout their athletic careers. Makenna Schott and Luke Knisely were also honored as Galeton’s Outstanding Female and Male Athletes for their accomplishments in school sports.

The banquet brought together athletes, coaches, families and community members to celebrate another successful year of Galeton athletics.

In baseball action over the weekend, the Wellsboro Hornets advanced to the PIAA District IV Class AAA semifinals at Mansfield University, where they faced Warrior Run. The Hornets fell 5-0, bringing their strong season to a close. Wellsboro finished the year as NTL Large School Division co-champions with an 18-3 record.

Local athletes also delivered impressive performances at the PIAA Track and Field State Championships over the weekend.

In Class AA competition, Wellsboro’s Piper Hoprich brought home two state titles, winning the girls 100-meter dash in 11.90 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 24.39 seconds. Canton’s Alexis McRoberts earned second place in both the girls discus, with a throw of 136 feet, 10 inches, and the shot put, with a mark of 40 feet, 10.75 inches.

Towanda’s Brynn Woodruff placed second in the girls javelin with a throw of 131 feet, 6 inches, while Wellsboro’s Lauren Kosek finished second in the girls 3200-meter run with a time of 10:35.87.

Wellsboro also saw strong relay performances. The boys 4×800-meter relay team of Jude Cuneo, Max Macias, David Seeling and Henry Whitney placed sixth, while the girls 4×100-meter relay team of Piper Hoprich, Sophia Yoder, Luna Moyer and Paige Rush placed fourth.

The Wellsboro girls track and field team finished third overall at the State Championship, capping off an outstanding spring season for area athletes.

Congratulations to all local athletes on their accomplishments.
