Speech Therapy on Horses
What do you get when you combine horseback riding with speech therapy? The innovative program: “Hey Is For Horses,” located at Straight On Til Morning Farm – a fusion of equine activity and therapeutic exercise. Given her experience with horses, Kerry Nelson has teamed up with speech language and pathologist Mikayla Mortimer to offer service to the Tioga County community.
“Right now we’re taking ages 2 to 21 years that have any type of speech language communication disability,” said Mikayla Mortimer. “We work on speech sounds, fluency disorders, language development, social skills. It’s fun, it’s motivating. Kids don’t like to work on things that are hard for them. They learn best through play.”
At this time, the “Hey Is For Horses” program is seeking volunteer side-walkers to help keep children steady on the horses as they walk around the arena.
In addition to the therapy program, the farm also offers horseback-riding lessons, arena rental for events, and equine-assisted learning.
If you’d like to learn more, are interested in volunteering or would like to enroll your child, visit their website at StraightOnTilMorningFarm.com.
