Southern Tioga Percussion Ensemble & Color Guard To Perform “Music In Motion”
The Southern Tioga Percussion Ensemble and Color Guard are eagerly preparing for “Tioga County Music in Motion” on Saturday, April 9th at Liberty High School Gymnasium. They are hosting this exciting competition of music and precision marching and have 10 units competing. The public is invited to an evening of musical entertainment which starts at 6:15.
The Percussion Ensemble and Color Guard are the indoor components of the Marching Band. The Percussion Ensemble consists of two groups, the marching percussion, and the pit which is primarily stationary. Drums of all sizes and cymbals are part of the marching percussion. The Pit consists of several marimbas, bells, electronic keyboard, a complete drum set and many other percussion instruments. The Color Guard, or sometimes called the Guard, are a separate unit and perform marching maneuvers with flags, sabers and rifles. Both units’ performances include music, choreography, and theater which create an exciting show for the audience. The students who participate in both groups not only perform, but also must help with the careful loading, unloading and storage of all instruments and equipment.
Students began rehearsals in November in the Blossburg Elementary School Auditorium and Gymnasium prepare for competition season. There are 3 directors who are responsible for the Color Guard, marching percussion and mallet percussion. Mr. Jon Ruth, Director of Bands for the Southern Tioga School District, is lead director. One of the things Jon likes about music is that “every student is involved and every student is counted on.”
To help pay for the expense of traveling to competitions, the members sell ads in a “Music in Motion” printed program. With the help of the funds raised, they will be attending the Region Championships at Central Mountain High School on April 27th and then the Tournament of Bands, Atlantic Coast Championships in Wild Wood, NJ April 27th through May 1st.
Jon shared that “the music program at Southern Tioga School District is very fortunate to have the support of the administration.” Because the school district is able to offer such a quality program, students will be prepared to participate in higher education music programs, often resulting in scholarships. Students participating learn the enjoyment of working with others toward a common goal and create lasting friendships through their shared experiences.
