South Wins 2019 D4 All-Star Game

by Ed Weaver - July 1, 2019

For the second straight year, the District IV South All-Star team defeated the District IV North All-Star team, 19-7, in the 29th annual game put on by the South Williamsport Lions Club at South Williamsport’s Rodney K. Morgans Stadium on Friday, June 28.

After early interceptions by both teams the South finally mounted a drive late in the 2nd quarter. On 3rd-and-26, South quarterback Philip Davis connected with Breven Derk on a 42-yard pass to the North 26. Davis and Derk teamed up again on another pass play to the North 13. A penalty on the South moved the ball back 5 yards, but the South still capitalized as Davis hit Ben Swineford in stride in the end zone from 18 yards out with 55 seconds left. Brendan Gregory converted the extra point and the South led, 7-0.

Neither team could muster much offense in the 3rd quarter, but again the South was able to find the scoreboard late in the quarter to increase their lead. After a North drive stalled and a Koby Peacock punt pinned the South at their own 1-yard line, quarterback Collin Bowers ripped off a 40-yard run then later connected with Derk on a 43-yard pass down to the North 6 to setup 1st-and-goal.

A penalty on the North after Derk’s catch moved the ball to the 3, where Jase Wright punched the ball in a play later. Jameson Kramer’s extra point was blocked but the South still held a 13-0 lead over the North with 39 seconds left in the quarter.

The North squad finally put points up on the scoreboard early in the 4th quarter. After starting their drive near midfield Blaze McClements broke a 20-yard run down to the South 28. After a short 2-yard run to the 26, the game was halted for lightning for 30 minutes. Once play resumed North quarterback Brayden Strouse hit North Penn-Mansfield’s Garrett David, the North’s Offensive MVP, with 9:58 left to play. Cameron Griffin’s kick split the uprights and the North trailed, 13-7.

The South once again mounted a drive late in the game and would score to increase their lead. Three passes of 14 yards each by Davis setup the South with a 1st-and-10 at the North 15. After a penalty by the North and a few short runs, Davis ran a quarterback sneak from a yard out with 3:44 remaining in the game. The South went for two but failed to capitalize and led, 19-7.

On the following kickoff Peacock found a seam in the South defense and took the ball 42 yards up to the South 43. From there the North put a drive together down near the South’s end zone with time running out, but a later interception by Joe Kahn and return to midfield with just over a minute remaining sealed the South victory before the game was again called due to lightning.

David led the North’s ground attack with 44 yards on 6 carries to go along with his 26-yard touchdown. Wellsboro’s Hunter Brown had 8 tackles for the North and teammate Robert Brown finished with 6 stops.
