The North Penn-Mansfield Panthers opened their football season Friday night at Island Park, hosting the South Williamsport Mountaineers.

South Williamsport controlled the game from the opening kickoff, shutting out the Panthers 48-0.

The Mountaineers got on the scoreboard with just over nine minutes remaining in the first quarter. After driving deep into North Penn-Mansfield territory, Cade Lusk punched the ball into the end zone from the middle of the field. Kaiden Paulhamus added the extra point to give South Williamsport a 7-0 lead.

South’s defense continued to dominate, forcing the Panthers to give the ball back. With just under five minutes left in the first quarter, Eli White broke to the outside and found the corner of the end zone. Paulhamus’ extra point made it 14-0.

The Panthers appeared to settle in during the second quarter, but South Williamsport found the end zone again on a first-and-10 play. White broke through a hole up the middle and raced into the end zone, extending the Mountaineers’ lead to 21-0.

South Williamsport continued to pull away after halftime, taking a 35-0 advantage into the fourth quarter.

The Mountaineers added their final touchdown late in the fourth quarter on a play that featured some impressive improvisation. Garrett Lorson threw to Sawyer Fry in the flat, but Fry bobbled the pass. Caleb Johnson came down with the tipped ball for the touchdown, putting the finishing touches on a 48-0 South Williamsport victory.

The win gives South Williamsport a dominant start to the season, while North Penn-Mansfield will look to regroup on the road.

Both teams return to action Friday night. South Williamsport travels to Sayre, while North Penn-Mansfield heads to Towanda.
