Sound of the Spirit of the Game

by John Vogt - December 2, 2016

The Wellsboro Hornets Football Team has just completed three of our best years in Wellsboro football history. Our coaches prepared and inspired our players to be the best that they could be. Our players played their hearts out and proved to be a force of nature. Few teams could get through D-Fence. Nor could they get over it or under it. That goose egg showed up on the scoreboard over and over again. Our fans turned out in numbers and supported our team. Our cheerleaders kept the flame burning. And, our Wellsboro High School Band was ON FIRE this season putting a song in our hearts, a bounce in our step (if you are Quinn Henry, that music may have also encouraged a zig or a zag and then a cut-back against the grain) and kept us all fired up and inspired.

This, coming together, as a community is part of the secret formula. This is why teams win. It took all of us together to create an atmosphere and a culture of winning. Matt Hildebrand and our outstanding coaching staff do their best to give us the tools and the confidence to win. But, it’s up to us on whether or not we are going to buy into this victorious way of thinking. When we all come together, and believe, something magical happens. For those of us who have experienced the pain of playing under that cloud of doom and the agony of defeat, you know exactly what I am talking about. Often it’s not the raw talent on a team or who has the biggest and the fastest players. It’s the heart. It’s the culture. It’s the atmosphere. When the Wellsboro Hornets took the field in recent years, you could feel the electricity of victory in the air. We were all a part of generating that victorious spirit instead of a spirit of defeat.

Today on Wellsboro Home Page we want to say thanks and give a shout-out to one of those organizations who contributed to that winning spirit. The Wellsboro High School Marching Band. We visit with Band Director Veronica Callahan and Drum Major Mackenzie Chilson to discuss the band and the inspiration they bring. We talked about the progress made over these past couple of years, the ON FIRE theme for this season’s performances, and the challenges of leading a marching band. We also find out what was going through Mackenzie’s mind the very first time she took the field to lead the band.

Thanks for watching today’s broadcast. Don’t forget to say thank you to our Wellsboro Home Page Marching Band members for their contribution. And thanks again to the Penn Wells Hotel, Mansfield University and all of our Home Page family of advertisers for supporting our efforts of covering the Wellsboro Hornets football program this past season. Congratulations Hornets!
