Sixth Grade Class Brings Winter Olympics to Canton Elementary
This week, the Canton Elementary sixth grade class is learning all about the Winter Olympics through art, music, reading and physical education. Before any of the events took place, the students took time to research the countries they were assigned to. The week began with an opening ceremony, in which groups of students introduced the country they represented. The students carried flags and candles around the gym, then sang the National Anthem, led by Mr. Jacob Fleury. The first competition was the exciting torch relay race. Austria took home the gold, followed by the United States in second place and Hungary in third. The rest of the week will include activities such as ice hockey, figure skating, luge, and more.
“It’s been a lot of fun to experience the kids learning about the Olympics. These are sixth graders, and they have had a little bit of experience with their families watching it but not as much as I had growing up,” Lucy Chamberlain explained. “One of the kids yesterday said that their dad was watching curling, and they didn’t know that sport, so it’s been nice to watch them learn about new things that they’ve never heard about before.”
