Safely Celebrating Christmas on Main Street

by Sara Vogt - December 3, 2020

This December 5th would have been the 38th Dickens of a Christmas here in Wellsboro, PA. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Wellsboro Borough Council has canceled the Dickens of a Christmas event.

On this broadcast, Ellen Dunham Bryant, President of the Wellsboro Hotel Company joins Sara Vogt, Home Page Vice President to discuss Wellsboro’s fifth annual Christmas On Main Street weekend, Friday through Sunday, December 11-13.

Due to COVID-19 recommendations from the Tioga County Taskforce and Governor Wolf’s office, Christmas on Main Street is a mask-required event. If you do not have a mask when you arrive one will be given to you by the Chamber of Commerce free of charge. Other changes were also made to the schedule following guidelines for a safe, fun event for the whole family.

Christmas on Main Street celebrates the history of the Corning Glass and its production of the shiny brites. Visit 26 Wellsboro locations displaying these historic ornaments made at the Corning Glass Factory in Wellsboro beginning during World War 11. Pick up the historic ornament tour book and passport at one of the following locations: Penn Wells Hotel, Wild Asaph Outfitters, The Farmer’s Daughters, and Pop’s Culture Shoppe.

Stop in at participating businesses on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and have your passport stamped. Once you have ten stamps, turn your passport into any display location or to the Penn Wells Lodge Front Desk by Sunday 6 PM and you’re entered to win a collection of gift certificates from area businesses. Prize winners will be announced on Wellsboro Home Page.

There will also be many discounts and other surprises when you shop at the stores on Main Street. Some examples are: Stop into Dunham’s to register for the opportunity to win a Christine A Moore hat, a two-night stay at the Penn Wells, and a $100 gift certificate from Dunham’s, Bethany’s Jewelry and Design is offering 20% off storewide, free holiday drink samples at Cafe 1905, passport holders receive a 10% discount at Highland Chocolates, free ornament with every purchase at The Farmer’s Daughter just to mention a few.

There will be a historic walking tour departing from the Penn Wells Hotel Lobby. Pre-registration is required; for more information please call (570) 724-2111.

Stop by the Penn Oak Realty offices window at 65 Main Street and watch and listen to the many broadcasts about the history of the people who worked at Corning Glass as they produced 90% of the Christmas tree ornaments for the world!

There is a publication that says there are ten towns in PA that celebrate Christmas well and Wellsboro is on that list! If you call Wellsboro your hometown shop locally this year and support our area merchants. AND if you come from away you will enjoy your stay and return often … this we know!

For more information please visit the Christmas on Main Street website here.
