Realizing Your Resolutions

UPMC Susquehanna aims to help you meet realistic goals this year!

by Sara Vogt - January 31, 2018

Our greatest wealth is our health! This timeless saying was first written by the Roman poet Virgil many centuries ago. As we began this new year many of us made resolutions to become healthier. It’s smart to establish worthy health goals that help us to feel our best. So, how are we doing with those resolutions? On today’s broadcast Sharon Belvin, a Health Fitness Specialist for UPMC Susquehanna, shares encouraging information to help us be successful in our wellness goals.

Sharon points out that the most prominent obstacle people face in having healthful success is that they set unrealistic goals. “They want to get from where they are to their health and wellness goals overnight.” But if we set realistic goals then we will be successful. Most people do well when they choose to have three meals and two snacks during the day which prevents them from being hungry and gives them sustainable energy. She concludes with, “Our food fuels everything we do in life. If we choose to eat the foods that fit our fitness and weight loss goals we will have the energy to do all the daily tasks that we love so much.”

When asked about recommendations for physical activity Sharon expressed her own opinion first, “ I think that a little activity every day is the best predictor of health.” She went on to say that the general guidelines are 30 minutes a day, five days a week. The scheduled time of exercise should be enjoyable such as walking your dog, playing with your children or grandchildren or spending time at the gym. (Watch today’s broadcast to find out her response when asked about vacuuming and doing laundry.)

During this time of winter, she explains that it is essential to keep your calories high enough that your immune system stays strong. Taking probiotics, vitamins, eating fruits and vegetables, and getting adequate sleep, helps our bodies to be on the offense. All of us can join in to be healthier this year, and we will feel much better!

The Weight Loss Challenge for all of the UPMC Susquehanna campuses begins on February 5th and ends on April 27th. It is open to all of their service partners and spouses. Home Page cameras will be following the progress of those participating once again this year. Who will be the winners? We hope all of you who join this year will have fun in this friendly and healthful competition!
