Real Estate Minute: What Do I Do About Pets?

by Andrew Moore - May 21, 2025

In today’s episode, Real Estate Agent Helen Stone talks to us about animals – both pets and livestock – at homes during showings. At Penn Oak, we are animal lovers. We love to have pets visit us and even have an office dog in the Wellsboro office. We just want to keep everyone safe – the animals and people.

What does Helen suggest the seller do with the animals during the showings?

For everyone’s safety, it’s always best to remove the pets from home if possible. If you can’t remove them, put dogs in a kennel or restrain them in a safe place. Cats, while generally more aloof, would also be best kept in a carrier until the visit has concluded.

For more exotic pets like birds and reptiles – it’s also best they be kept in an enclosure and covered. Helen encourages sellers to make a special note to their agent about their place in the home and advise all visitors not to touch them.

Buyers and visitors are always advised to never touch an unfamiliar animal – no matter how cute and fluffy they may be. Sellers are encouraged to always inform their agents of the presence of any animals – whether outdoor or indoor. Be sure fencing and pens are secure.

It is also important to inform your agent of any allergies you may have, so they can help avoid an incident.

If you would like Helen to help you sell your property or purchase one, whether you have animals or not, you can find her at the Penn Oak Realty Wellsboro office at 65 Main Street, Wellsboro. Call her at the office 570-724-8000 or on her cell, 570-439-5253.
