Real Cars, Real Roads, Real Fast!
We had the privilege of covering the Waste Management Winter Rally this past weekend. The winter rally was held on Saturday, Feb. 15. A total of seven participants competed in this unique racing event. Rallying is a form of auto racing that takes place on public or private roads with modified or specially built road-legal cars. This racing is distinguished by its point-to-point format in which participants and their co-drivers drive between set control points called special stages. Each driver leaves the starting point of each stage at set intervals, and their completion time – from start to finish – for that stage is recorded. The race is won by the driver with the shortest total completion time of all the stages.
The Waste Management Winter Rally consisted “of one stage, run five times, covering a total of 56 miles with 44 stage miles on land owned by Waste Management and used as part of the STPR stages.” – STPR.org
Driver Alvin Fong and co-driver William Machin claimed first place, completing the race with a total stage clear time of 1 hour, 21 minutes, 36.2 seconds. John Kramer and Adam Kimmett took second place followed by Antonio Esposito and Philip Barnes in third place. For full results, you can visit http://www.stpr.org/2014winterrally/results.html.
