Personal Profiles – Ed Weaver, Coach & Entrepreneur

Meet the man behind Circle W Sports

Tioga County is home to people from various walks of life – from teachers to doctors to artists and computer technicians. But how did they become what they are today, and what brought them here? These questions and more are answered in this Home Page series: Personal Profiles. Today’s broadcast features Home Page Sports director and founder of Circle W Sports, Ed Weaver.

Ed realized his passion for sports at an early age. “I was always involved in peewee sports from the time I was in second grade and played 10 years of football.” He also participated in basketball and track & field.

Weaver also noted that his parents were always supportive of his endeavors. “They always told me, ‘if you’re going to start something, finish it through.’” This tenacity and drive has stuck with him throughout his career.

Later, Ed continued on to receive education from Pennsylvania College of Technology and earned a degree in Web & Applications Development. While enrolled he took the next step towards what would eventually be the start of his own business.

While visiting Wellsboro for spring break during his junior year of college, Ed encountered his former coach, Mike Pietropola, who informed Ed there was an opening for a football coaching staff position. He was hired as a volunteer assistant and was soon promoted to a full-time, paid varsity assistant.

While coaching, Ed came up with an idea to give the teams and athletes more publicity. Outside of major media outlets and professional teams and athletes, not much information or statistics were available online at the time. In an effort to give more exposure to the football team, Ed created WellsboroFootball.com in 2006. The website eventually snowballed and evolved into WellsboroAthletics.com in 2010. Ed worked on the websites outside of his full time jobs at the time, entering statistics and writing articles.

In addition, Ed has also coached track and is now Wellsboro High School’s primary statistician for football and basketball and coaches middle school basketball.

As the websites became more involved, there became a greater push to see more statistics and athletes recognized. That’s when Ed launched his own business, Circle W Sports. Through this service, Ed creates a web platform for schools to enter and display scores, statistics and analysis of their athletes, teams and athletic programs.
