Panthers shutout Wyalusing, 14-0

by Ed Weaver - September 11, 2017

The North Penn-Mansfield Panthers shutout previously undefeated Wyalusing 14-0 on Friday, September 8.

Midway through the opening quarter the Panthers took the lead as Kipp Hillson intercepted a Calvin Burke pass and returned it to the Rams 7-yard line. Brendan Hill then punched the ball into the end zone to put the Panthers up 6-0 after the extra point missed with 6:49 left in the first.

Like the Panthers’ previous two games, this one too turned out to be a defensive battle. Wyalusing’s defense held the Panther offense four separate occasions on fourth down and intercepted a pass, but North Penn’s defense forced three turnovers on the night. Hill and Hillson both recorded interceptions and John Minnich recovered a fumble.

Eventually in the fourth quarter the Panther defense pinned the Rams deep inside their own territory and forced them to punt. The Panthers came away with the ball at the Rams’ 22-yard line where Hill scored for the second time of the night. North Penn went for the two-point conversion following the touchdown and Brent Burleigh found Justin Shedd open in the front corner to push the score to 14-0 with 9:41.

The Panthers held on the rest of the way and improved their 2017 record to 2-1 (1-1 NTL Large School Division).

Burleigh finished 10-of-20 for 133 yards, Hill rushed 17 times for 88 yards and two touchdowns, and Dylan Wesneski caught 3 passes for 67 yards. Linebacker Garrett David led the team with 9 tackles and 1 sack.

The Panthers are back at Island Park on Friday, September 15 against South Williamsport.
