Panthers Edge Black Knights in Thrilling 24-17 Showdown at Island Park
Under the bright Friday night lights on September 5th, the North Penn-Mansfield Panthers hosted the Towanda Black Knights at Island Park in a heart-pounding matchup that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the final whistle. In a game defined by big plays, late drama, and relentless determination, the Panthers clawed their way to a 24-17 victory.
The action kicked off with a strong defensive stand by the Panthers, setting the tone early. On a critical second-and-inches play, Jeremiah Lawrence powered his way across the goal line to open the scoring. After the extra point, North Penn-Mansfield took an early 7-0 lead.
Towanda responded late in the second quarter, capitalizing on field position to set up Brayden Spencer, who drilled a field goal to put the Black Knights on the board. At halftime, the Panthers maintained a slim 7-3 advantage.
Just three minutes into the third quarter, the Panthers extended their lead when Brody Grinnell booted a clutch field goal, making it 10-3. But Towanda struck back. With 3:56 left in the third, Jazick Brown broke loose on the outside for a Black Knights touchdown. A failed trick-play conversion kept the Panthers ahead 10-9.
North Penn-Mansfield answered quickly. Quarterback Bradley Brooks dropped back and delivered a strike to Luke Kreger, who was left wide open in the corner of the endzone. With the extra point good, the Panthers pushed their lead to 17-9 heading into the fourth.
Towanda wasn’t done yet. Quarterback Reese Sluyter capped off a dominant drive with a rushing touchdown, then barreled through the middle for a two-point conversion to tie the game 17-17.
With under 30 seconds left, the Panthers found their hero. On a handoff near the goal line, Kreger turned the corner, beat his defender, and crossed the plane for the game-winning score. The Panthers’ defense sealed the victory moments later, shutting down Towanda’s final drive. Final score: North Penn-Mansfield 24, Towanda 17.
The Black Knights will look to bounce back on the road Friday, September 12th, against the Wellsboro Hornets. The Panthers hit the road as well, traveling to Canton on Saturday for another tough matchup.
