North Penn-Mansfield downs Wellsboro
The Wellsboro Hornets and North Penn-Mansfield Tigers took to the basketball court last night in the first annual Margaret “Peg” Berguson Memorial Trophy game between the two rival schools.
After the first half of play, the Tigers held a 24-18 lead before Sophomore Brandon Lamphier connected on a long-range jumper to pull the Hornets to within three points. Senior Michael Pietropola then brought the Hornets to within a point after a three-pointer of his own.
The Hornets would later tie the game with 4:16 remaining in the third quarter on an easy layup by Senior Kieron Smethers. It was neck and neck for the remainder of the quarter with the Tigers holding a slim 38-36 advantage heading into the final frame.
Mansfield would go on a run in the final minutes of the fourth quarter and would pull away from the Hornets down the stretch for a 58-46 Northern Tier League victory.
Following the game, Wellsboro High School Prinicpal David Krick presented the memorial trophy to the Berguson family and the winning North Penn-Mansfield Tigers.
We will have more highlights and interviews with both teams tomorrow morning, right here on Wellsboro Home Page.
