North Penn-Mansfield Baseball Preview 2017
The 2017 baseball season starts this week, and the Tigers are ready to get their season in full swing.
Head Coach: Matt Perry (6th year)
2016 Season Record: 18-6
Key Returners: JP Shaw, Joel Whittaker, Carl Dinger, Derek Herbst
Players to Watch: JP Shaw, Joel Whittaker, Carl Dinger
The Tigers claimed a District IV Class AA championship in 2016, despite starting the year in Class A. The Tigers beat Warrior Run 5-2 to win their first title since 2004 and made a run to the PIAA quarterfinals, which ended in a 1-0 loss to Neumann Goretti in extra innings.
“I’m hoping everyone’s ready to come back,” said head coach Matt Perry. “We’re looking to get back there (state playoffs) if we can. Just getting out of the NTL and the district is usually as tough as anything. I think we’ll play one game at a time and see where that gets us.”
The Tigers return all but three players from last year’s District championship team, including JP Shaw. Shaw, who is already signed with hometown Mansfield University after his high school career ends, ran the table in the Tigers’ 2016 postseason run, and will continue to be a force on the mound this season. Logan Adams and Derek Herbst will also see quality time on the mound.
Whittaker and Dinger bring back their good bats and all-around speed. Whittaker will captain the outfield from his center field location, while Brendan Hill and Dylan Wesneski will be corner outfielders and will bat back to back in the order. Dinger will hold down third base, while not pitching, and fellow infielders Herbst and Kipp Hillson will hold down the infield with Justice Giarth, Dylan Meyer, Dewey Wise, and Nate Mohunsky.
The Tigers finished behind Athens in the NTL Large School Division standings last season, but with all of their returners, should be title contenders at both the league and district levels, and make another run into state playoffs.
“All of us will need to work together and contribute to build on last years success,” concluded Perry.
The Tigers start their season this Friday against Coudersport at home.
