North Penn-Mansfield baseball overpowers Sayre
The North Penn-Mansfield Tigers scored runs in bunches as they defeated Sayre in NTL cross-over baseball action on Friday, April 27.
Sayre came in with a 7-1 record before the Tigers knocked them off Friday afternoon.
The Tigers scored the game’s first run in their first plate appearance in the bottom of the first inning. After a Kipp Hillson walk, Dewey Wise sent a hard ground ball past the Redskin third baseman to score Hillson. Later in the second, Blaise Dietrich scored on a base hit by Logyn Choplosky after drawing a walk. Choplosky would also touch home plate after Dylan Wesneski’s hit hopped over the head of the third baseman.
Sayre, however rallied in the top of the third with three runs of their own to tie it. The Redskins lead off with three straight hits by Jakeb Ressler, Sam Wheeler, and Jordan Rockwell. Rockwell doubled to right field to score both Ressler and Wheeler then would score on a base hit by Nate Sweet.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the fourth when the Tigers added three more runs. With Dylan Williamson and Wise on base Justin Kriner singled past first base to score both then would score the next at bat as Logan Garverick hit a line drive over the short stop.
Sayre added what would be their final run of the game in the top of the fifth as Sweet would score on a wild pitch by Noah Spencer.
The Tigers weren’t done scoring as they added three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Wesneski, Hillson, and Wise all scored. In the sixth, Hillson hit a three-run home run to score himself, Spencer, and Wesneski.
Sayre was unable to manufacture any runs in the top of the seventh, giving the Tigers the win.
Wise, Garverick, and Kriner were all 2-for-5 at the plate, Wesneski and Hillson were both 2-for-4, Williamson and Spencer were 1-for-3, and Choplosky was 1-for-1. Wesneski (2), Hillson, Williamson, Kriner, Garverick, and Choplosky all hit doubles for the Tigers as they produced 8 extra base hits with Hillson’s home run.
Choplosky started on the mound for North Penn-Mansfield and went the first 4 and 1/3 innings, allowing 8 hits and a walk while striking out 2. Spencer came on for the final 2 and 2/3 innings with 3 hits, a walk and a strikeout.
The Tigers improve to 6-5 overall and 6-4 in the NTL Large School Division. The Tigers host Wyalusing on Wednesday, May 2 and travel to rival Wellsboro on Friday, May 4.
