New Fair Queen crowned!

by Lauren Gooch - August 1, 2017

The crowning of the 2017 Tioga County Fair Queen took place on Sunday, July 30th at the Whitneyville Fairgrounds. The contestants were given a personal interview and were judged on their poise, personality, mental alertness, activities, appearance, and knowledge of the fair. In addition, they were tested on their public speaking skills by answering a question spontaneously and giving a speech to persuade others to visit the Tioga County Fair.

Additionally, the candidates were required to write an essay on “What my fair means to my community.” The results are listed below, along with each girl’s thoughts on what makes the Tioga County Fair so special.

2017 Tioga County Fair Queen (Alyssa Remley): “Every year, the growing anticipation of the fair is like coming home after being away for a long time,” Remley said. “From the delicious food, to the local homegrown vegetable and handmade exhibits, to the local entertainers performing throughout the fair, all of these wonderful people and exhibits add to the overall positive atmosphere of our community.”

First alternate (Natalie Kalyan): “The Tioga County Fair supports its young members and strives to guarantee their success,” Kalyan said. “We offer a variety of fun and exciting projects that promote character building skills, including responsibility, leadership, communication, and independence.”

Second alternate (Thecia Spencer): “Many families view fair week as their annual vacation,” Spencer said. “It is a time to step away from the daily routine and meet with your larger family known as your community.”

Miss Congeniality (Nicole Hummel): “The fair is one symbol of the community,” Hummel said. “It gives kids and young adults a chance to show off their talents and have a great time while doing it.”
