Murphy’s Blueberry Farm Is Open, With Nearly 4,000 Bushes
Murphy’s Blueberry Farm is a year-round operation at the top of Mulberry Hill in Mansfield. Charlie and Deb Murphy purchased the property in 1998 and found a few blueberry bushes which peaked their interest. They bought a few books, took some classes at Penn State & Cornell University where they learned of the health benefits & nutritional value of blueberries. Each year they planted a few more bushes and today have close to 4,000 blueberry bushes!
Deb Murphy shared “We have a friend who has a small cannery and does amazing things with farm fresh produce. He once said to us “blueberries can be made into marvelous products”. With his help each season we try to add something new. We started with blueberry syrup & blueberry cider then added blueberry butter, it’s like apple butter nice & smooth & so naturally sweet. Then we did jam, preserves & delicious summery blueberry vinaigrette and then something to interest the guys, a salsa & bbq seemed fun. We also offer an amazing sugar-free preserve that is juice sweetened, and last year we started offering a blueberry birch beer soda made by Reading Soda Works who make their product with all natural ingredients”. Along with blueberry products, you can pick your own blueberries, purchase ready picked or frozen berries. They even have blueberry bushes available to purchase.
Murphy, a retired teacher, went on to say “Each year we try to share our love of blueberries with the youth in our area, by inviting them to spend some time on the farm. It’s a fun way to give back, educate the kids and inspire them to eat healthy. This year we will host campers from Hess Farm Camp on Wednesday, July 13th. They will learn about the life cycle of a blueberry bush, pick their own berries, participate in a blueberry drawing contest, meet local author Jeanie Gaugler, and watch the characters in her book come to life as she reads. Each camper will make & enjoy a blueberry float with ice cream provided by a local favorite, Mansfield’s Lil Half Pint at the end of their visit”. On July 20th the 5th grade students from Finn Academy in Elmira, NY will visit the farm as they pursue a summer of learning about foraging and food farming.
