Muncy Survives Wellsboro’s Late Surge in 23-20 Thriller

by Wyatt Wood - September 1, 2025

On Saturday night, the Wellsboro Hornets hosted the Muncy Indians in a hard-fought matchup that came down to the wire, with Muncy escaping with a narrow 23-20 victory on the gridiron.

The game opened with Muncy striking first. Starting deep in their own territory at the 24-yard line, quarterback Andrew Walters broke free on a keeper for a big gain to set the tone. A few plays later, Walters connected on a perfectly executed screen pass to Nathan Rogers, who found open space and reached the end zone. The extra point attempt sailed wide, leaving the Indians ahead 6-0.

Wellsboro responded immediately on the next drive, marching the ball downfield to the 2-yard line. Quarterback Griffin Morral called his own number and powered in on the left side for the score. Kicker Finn Matthews nailed the extra point, putting the Hornets in front 7-6.

Late in the first quarter, Muncy attempted to shift momentum, but the Wellsboro defense had other plans. On third-and-long, Walters launched a deep pass, only for the Hornets’ secondary to swarm the play. Marek Mascho made a crucial interception and returned it deep into Muncy territory, setting up Wellsboro inside the 10-yard line.

Early in the second quarter, Morral found Mascho again—this time on offense—hitting him over the middle for a touchdown. Matthews’ kick extended Wellsboro’s lead to 14-6.

But Muncy refused to go away. With 6:30 left in the half, Walters sliced through the Hornets’ defense on a quarterback run to reach the end zone. Kicker Austin Hartzel converted the extra point, trimming Wellsboro’s lead to 14-13.

Minutes later, Muncy’s ground game exploded again, breaking a 35-yard run to put the Indians in scoring range. After the Hornets’ defense held firm, Hartzel drilled a 34-yard field goal to give Muncy a 16-14 edge.

Before halftime, the Indians struck one more time. With a man in motion, Walters launched a deep pass to Rogers, who broke free for a long touchdown, sending Muncy into the locker room ahead 23-14.

The Hornets came out of halftime determined to rally. Early in the third quarter, Morral led a steady drive downfield, capping it off with another keeper for a touchdown to close the gap to 23-20.

From there, both defenses tightened, turning the second half into a battle of field position. Late in the fourth quarter, Wellsboro threatened inside Muncy’s 5-yard line, but the Indians’ defense stood tall, forcing a turnover on downs.

With time winding down, Muncy took a knee to seal the hard-earned victory.

The Hornets (0-2) will look to bounce back next week as they hit the road to face Wyalusing on Saturday, September 6th.
