MU Psych Central – Learn from the Pros

MU Psych Students learn from Q&A time with MU Alumni Panel

by Dr Nicolle Mayo - November 17, 2016

This year marked the 3rd annual Psychology Alumni Day that the Mansfield University psychology club hosted. This event was the original idea of a former psychology student, Barbara Gall, now a graduated alum, who developed this event as part of her senior capstone project. The project was received so well that the MU psychology club decided to continue the tradition of this event.

Four psychology alum, Amanda Longey, Julie Glover, Kelsey Dewitt, and Matt Guagliardo, were selected as panelists to discuss their experiences at Mansfield University, how it prepared them for the real world, and their current job or career. Alumni traveled as long as three hours, and as short as ten minutes to their Alma Mater, but all were happy to visit Mansfield again. After a brief luncheon that included the four alum, psychology faculty, and psychology club officers, the panel began, with current psychology students posing a number of questions to the panelists in order to gain a broader perspective of graduate school experiences, and the working world.

Questions ranged from, “what classes should I take that will prepare me for a future career?” to “what is the most interesting experience you’ve had at your job?” Students asked the panelists about challenging experiences they had as undergraduates, opportunities they wish they had pursued, what skills they developed that made them more marketable, how the alum transitioned from a school-oriented mindset to a work-oriented mindset, and what their jobs were like.

Both students and alumni left refreshed from the panel discussion. Students reported feeling, “more hopeful about the future” and more confident in making decisions about their academic focus. Some felt relief, and others got contact information from the alumni to keep in touch and ask more questions. The alum enjoyed sharing their experiences and imparting their wisdom to students. For some of the alum, it was a way to give back to the community that helped grow them, but also the community they helped grow.

This Psychology Alumni Day was another success. It was a meaningful learning experience for our students, and a great way to encourage current students to work hard, take advantage of the resources and opportunities offered to them, and network.

MU Psych Central is supported by the Mansfield Psychology Department, which includes Dr. Gretchen Sechrist, Department Chair and Associate Professor, who specializes in Social Psychology, Dr. Brian Loher, Professor, our Human Resource Management specialist, Dr. Francis Craig, Professor, expert in Mind/Body Health, Dr. Karri Verno, Associate Professor, who specializes in Lifespan Development and Forensic Psychology and Nicolle Mayo, Assistant Professor, expert in Marriage and Family Therapy.
