Ms. Spencer’s Class Brews Success and Life Lessons
For the last several months, Ms. Spencer’s Supplemental Learning Support Class has been busy fundraising for a class field trip. Their efforts have included making and selling bubble drinks and homemade dog treats.
Their fundraisers were not only a means of earning money but also offered hands-on learning opportunities. Their journey began by discussing supply and demand, interviewing potential customers about taste preferences, and creating/ analyzing bar graphs to decide what flavors to purchase for their first bubble drink sale.
While their bubble drink fundraiser was a massive success, they also learned about business failure with homemade dog treats, making less money with each batch. Despite minimal success with the dog treat fundraiser, students learned many lessons: the basics of baking, the names of utensils/uses, kitchen safety/hygiene, the importance of legible writing, and the importance of taking pride in their product packaging.
Through the highs and lows, the students thoroughly enjoyed the social aspects of increased interaction with faculty and staff. They take responsibility for providing a quality product, feel pride when they start to see their hard work pay off, and are confident they can do more than they think they can. Their final fundraiser was Friday, May 16th. The CES support staff in Ms. Spencer’s room are top-notch and should be commended for their tireless work to help the fundraisers and field trip come to fruition.
