Mounties Drop State Opener to Mount Calvary Christian, 75-52

by Ed Weaver - March 9, 2022

The North Penn-Liberty Mounties were unable to overcome a 23-point first quarter deficit as they fell to Mount Calvary Christian 75-52 in the opening round of the PIAA Class A basketball tournament on Tuesday, March 8.

Mount Calvary started out on fire from behind the three-point arc as Avery Kopcha hit three quick shots to take an early 9-0 lead over the host Mounties. The visiting Chargers would extend their lead to as much as 18-0 before North Penn-Liberty got on the scoreboard, but as the opening eight minutes passed by, the Mounties found themselves trailing 25-2.

Taking away the opening quarter, North Penn-Liberty stayed right with Mount Calvary the rest of the game. Both teams scored 17 points apiece in the 2nd quarter, the Mounties outscored the Chargers 22-18 in the 3rd, and the Chargers outscored the Mounties 15-11 in the final frame, which would have produced a 50-50 tie all things being equal.

“They were unbelievable shooters,” Mountie head coach Brian Litzelman said. “I thought every one of them shot really well but we talked to the boys about the game being a single possession on defense in trying to get back in the game. We kept getting close but they would hit another dagger from three and we just couldn’t catch up.”

After their 17-point quarter Mount Calvary had a 42-19 lead at the half, and the Mounties managed to cut the lead to 60-41 after the third. North Penn-Liberty would get the lead down to 15 points early in the fourth but just couldn’t overcome their opening deficit.

Noah Shedden and Derek Litzelman led the Mounties with 19 points each. Hunter Thompson finished with 7, Devin Bradley added 5, and Kyle Davis rounded out the scoring with 2 points.

Kopcha would lead all scorers with 24 points. Brett Taylor (16), Evan Dumaine (14), and Wyatt Lamb (12) also finished in double figures.

The loss ends the Mounties season with a 15-10 record.

“I’m very proud of this team and what they accomplished this year,” concluded Litzelman. “One, I don’t think many people thought that we would even be much about .500. I don’t think anyone saw us playing for a district title or a state game. But these guys are one of those teams that epitomizes the word ‘team.’ Any given night through tough games someone was leading us, it wasn’t just always one guy, so the team is huge for them. I couldn’t be prouder of this group of guys that I am at this point.”
