Messiah Community Sing

by Chloe Quimby - December 9, 2015

Hamilton-Gibson Productions is presenting the 10th Annual “Messiah” Community Sing at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Pearl Street in Wellsboro on Sunday, December 13 at 2:30 p.m.

The “Messiah,” composed by George Frideric Handel in 1741, is the signal work of the Christmas season for millions of people around the world primarily because of the “Hallelujah Chorus.”

On December 13, audience members are invited to sing the choruses of the Christmas portion of Handel’s “Messiah” and end the event singing the “Hallelujah Chorus.” The audience will also hear Mansfield University choral program students sing the solos.

Conducting the Messiah Community Sing for the first time will be Peggy Dettwiler, Mansfield University’s Choral Activities director. Performing the “Messiah” will be a string quartet composed of professional instrumentalists. They include: violinists Ellen Murphy and Tim Miller, violist Aurora Manuel and cellist Brad Holtman. Marian Miller will be at the keyboard.

“Thomas Putnam came up with the idea for the ‘Messiah’ Community Sing in 2006; I was on board right away,” said Murphy, violinist. “My husband Brad and I have performed in the string quartet ever since. This will be our 10th time.”

The community sing is a pay-what-you-can admission at the door. Proceeds will benefit the H.G. Children and Youth Choirs. The Sherwood Motel is the sponsor of this event.

No reservations are required. For more information, call (570) 724-2079 or email hamgib@gmail.com.
