Memorial Day Festivities Bring Canton Community Together in Remembrance

by Samantha Morgan - May 26, 2026

The Canton community gathered this past Monday to honor the legacy left by the men and women who gave their lives for our country for Memorial Day. The morning began with a parade through town, followed by a ceremony held at the Canton War Memorial Park. The ceremony offered moments of reflection, prayer, and celebration of our great nation in honor of those who fought for our freedom. It began with the Raising of the Flag, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, Evelyn Bellows performing the National Anthem, and an opening prayer by Pastor Nancy Beahm. The poem, “In Flanders Field,” was read, Ryder Route performed “American Soldiers,” and guest speaker Scott Wheeler offered heartfelt words. The Canton High School band then performed “Patriotic Spectacular,” and Cody Humble performed taps. In addition, Leo Sechrist and Lou Ann Groover performed the POW MIA Missing Man Ceremony and Kiara Stone performed “God Bless America.” The ceremony closed with a prayer by Pastor Sean Tymeson. Following the ceremony was a meal for veterans and a car show.
“For a lot of Americans this is the day we open the pool, we have a barbecue, but for people who have served; and I served in Iraq and Afghanistan and I left some friends over there, it is a day of remembrance. It is a happy day for some, but for most it’s a day of remembrance,” Darryl Jannone, retired U.S. Army Command Sergeant Major, expressed.
Thank you to the VFW who put together the Memorial Day ceremony and festivities, and to the Canton community who came together to honor those who served in our country’s military.
